Danny’s nonverbal communication doesn’t stop his vibrant personality from shining through. His smile lights up any room.
However, Danny wasn’t always beaming so brightly. He was just 11 years old when he had to move away from his family to live in a group home on Long Island. Although he was familiar with the facility—having attended its day program for five years prior—it simply didn’t feel like home.
He eventually grew accustomed to his surroundings, but Danny was still unhappy. His life changed dramatically right before his 23rd birthday. That’s when Danny moved to Rose House’s Hanover Community Residence in Cedar Knolls, NJ.
“He has adjusted really well to life at Rose House,” said his mother, Terri. “He loves it there, and we’ve had no issues.”
The residence accommodates 12 residents who enjoy comfortable living conditions and each other’s company. Danny loves spending time in the rec room, where he and his housemates engage in various activities, including art projects and games. They also celebrate birthdays, Halloween, and other fun occasions with parties there.
Danny particularly enjoys watching movies, especially comedies. It’s no surprise that his favorite actor is Jim Carrey, who is known for expressive facial gestures.
Outside the residence, Danny enjoys bowling, attending musicals, fishing, going to the beach, shopping for food and clothes, and getting Slurpees at 7-Eleven. But on most days, Danny enhances his abilities at a local day program.
They say actions speak louder than words, and Danny gets his point across without speaking. His excitement is evident whenever he sees a baby or a stuffed animal. You can also sense his pride through photos of Danny as a groomsman at two of his three siblings’ weddings.
